B&W is something that in the film era I never mastered = never came close. Here I am being snobby and talking about the exposure, chemistry and printing techniques used by masters such as Ansel Adams and his Zone technique. Adams could print from starch white to deep black with all gradients in between and create prints with details in almost charcoal black areas of the image.

This b&w "zone" capability is completely lost in the digital era. Now we are swayed by colr and our ability to amnipulate it - my work being a tiniest of slivers and an example of our drunken process.

They used filters - red and green, etd to pop out contrast. They underexposed and over developed to find details in shaddows. They doged and buirnt the print to fix errors. Not sure if PhotoShop does all of that - it does work with color.....

How may great b&w movies come out each year?
